Nyssa, OR (CBS2) — On April 21, 2023, Rene Castro the suspect accused of shooting Nyssa Police Officer Cpl. Joseph Johnson was back in court to be arraigned on the indictment that was decided on by a grand jury.
The grand jury heard from more than twelve witnesses and was presented with evidence from the case this week before deciding that the indictment should move forward in court, according to David Goldthorpe the Malheur County District Attorney.
The next hearing set for Castro is in October where he will be able to enter a plea of guilty or not guilty. In the meantime, Castro's defense will look over the evidence in the case and make their decisions on how they will proceed with the case.
Goldthorpe says that the October hearing does seem like a long time to wait but says he thinks that the defense is trying to be realistic about the amount of time needed to prepare for this case.
The funeral for Cpl. Joseph Johnson is on Saturday, April 22 at 11 am. CBS2 will be live streaming the service on our website and Facebook page.
