Jawed Karim is a German-American Internet entrepreneur and YouTube co-founder. He’s the first person on the web to upload a video. As of December 2019, this inaugural video, titled Me at the zoo, was viewed more than 81 million times.

On Saturday, April 23, 2005, at 8:27 pm, Karim posted the first-ever video on YouTube using the username “Jawed.” The video was “Me at the zoo” and it captured him describing elephants. It was shot by his friend, Yakov Lapitsky.

Karim then enrolled as a graduate student in computer science at Stanford University while acting as an adviser to YouTube. As a result, he took the least amount of shares in the company as compared to Hurley and Chen. Due to his smaller role in the company, Karim was unknown to the public as the third founder until YouTube was acquired by Google in 2006.

He gave a lecture about the history of YouTube at the University of Illinois’ annual ACM Conference entitled YouTube: From Concept to Hyper-growth in October 2006. Karim then returned to the University of Illinois in May 2007 as the 136th and youngest Commencement Speaker in the school’s history.
