Thompson initially gained prominence as a lawyer and later transitioned into acting, notably portraying district attorney Arthur Branch in the NBC series “Law & Order”. He briefly left acting to serve a term in the Senate but returned to the entertainment industry afterward.

Early Life and Education

Fred Thompson, the son of car dealer Fletcher Session and housewife Ruth Bradley, had humble beginnings. He attended Lawrence County High School and worked multiple jobs, including at the local post office and in a bike assembly facility, to support his education. He pursued higher education at the University of North Alabama and later at the University of Memphis, where he earned dual degrees in philosophy and political science in 1964. He received a scholarship for law school at Tulane University and Vanderbilt University, eventually obtaining his law degree from the latter in 1967.

Thompson’s political career commenced with his role as an assistant to the Federal Public Ministry, and he later served as a Special Advisor to the US Senate Committee for Foreign Affairs and the US Senate Committee for the Secret Service. Additionally, he ran his own legal practice in Nashville, Tennessee, and gained attention for successfully representing Marie Ragghianti in a high-profile case in 1977, which was later adapted into the film “Marie”.

Transition to Acting and Political Career

Thompson ventured into acting and appeared in various films and television series, including several episodes of “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” and “Law & Order: Criminal Intent”. In 1994, he embarked on a political journey and was elected as a senator for Tennessee, securing re-election in 1996. After concluding his term in the Senate, Thompson engaged in political commentary with ABC News Radio and signed a contract with Salem Communications’s Townhall. Despite a brief presidential campaign in 2007, he announced his retirement in January 2008 following a limited primary campaign.

Fred Thompson passed away in Nashville on November 1, 2015, after battling cancer. He was buried in Lawrenceburg, Tennessee. In his personal life, he was married twice and had five children, with his daughter Elizabeth tragically succumbing to a drug overdose in 2002.
